Friend of Sankara Nethralaya Award

On January 4th 2009, Sankara Nethralaya Eye Institute of Chennai conferred ′Friend of Sankara Nethralaya′ award on Sockalingam Sam Kannappan of Houston. Its Founder Dr. S.S. Bhadrinath praised Kannappan as a Trustee and Mr. Jain, Director of Police, Tamil Nadu State gave the award.

At ExNora meeting on January 4th, Kannappan delivered a lecture on Water Management Strategies with the presentation prepared by his son Ramakrishnan, who is completing PhD at the University of Texas, Austin. ExNora′s Founder M.B. Nirmal mentioned that Kannappan built three temples in USA. Mr. S. Audiseshiah, IAS, Principal Secretary, Public Works Department, Tamil Nadu Government, film actor Charu Hassan and S. Rangarajan spoke on the importance of protecting water bodies.

Thozhil Maamani Award

On January 7th, Madras Developmental Agency awarded the title ′Thozhil Maamani′ to Kannappan. Justice AR. Lakshmanan, Chairman, Law Commission of India gave the award to Kannappan.

On January 17th, Kannappan congratulated Mr. Hassain, President of the Panchayat of Ravanasamudram. This village just received ___ from the President of India. With assistance from Music Director Bharadwaj, village with sewer running on the streets was converted in to one hundred percent healthy village.

At the request of Kannappan, Mr. Pankaj Kumar Bansal, Collector of Sivaganga arranged thirty eight foreign tourists visit Nattarasankottai where Kannappan grew up as a boy. The occasion was Koil Pongal where about one thousand ladies make pongal same time in front of Kannathal temple.

The Indian Star Award

India's 59th Republic Day was celebrated at Staffod Civic Center in southwest Houston, organized by India Culture Center (Houston) on January 20. From left, Sugarland Mayor David Wallace and Consul General of India at Houston S.M. Gavai presented Leadership award to Sockalingam Sam Kannappan of Houston during the event.
